How to Decorate with Pantone’s Color of the Year

In case you hadn’t heard, Pantone has selected its Color of the Year for 2018 and it’s a unique one: Ultra Violet. Reminiscent of an early evening sky, and equally as complex, Ultra Violet invites us all to tap into our artistic and reflective side.

Designers and interior decorators have already begun to tackle this blue-based purple hue, bringing its complexity into the patterns and materials they choose in their work.

Unlike other jewel tones, Ultra Violet hasn’t been a common color found in home décor as of late, creating an opportunity for designers and homeowners alike to explore new styles with this fashion-forward color.

If you’re interested in bringing some Ultra Violet into your home, we have a few suggestions to help you get started.

Take it slow

Baby steps. Don’t dive all in right away. Remember that there will be a new color next year and the year after that and so on. No one expects you to completely transform your home every year based on the Pantone Color of the Year (unless you live at Pantone headquarters, maybe).

Start with a couple of throw pillows or a blanket at the bottom of your bed to see how the color fits into the rest of your home décor. If you like it, try playing with different shades of purple to complement Ultra Violet’s undertones.

Accentuate your space with accents

A single wall in the bathroom, a rug in the living room, an antique armchair in the dining room, whatever accent piece you decide to try Ultra Violet on, it’ll likely work. Why? Because this particular color is an unexpected unifier. It pairs well with softer hues like lilac and blush as well as hues like red, green, yellow, blue, black and gray, and can easily help tie a room together.

For those less inclined to try out Ultra Violet on an accent piece, consider going even smaller. Decorate with amethysts, lilac flowers or even consider trying out a unique and sophisticated purple glass doorknob that will give a subtle nod to the Color of the Year, but won’t overwhelm your space.

Embrace it

As it’s described on the Pantone website, Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us toward the future. It’s more than a color, it’s a state of mind that encourages us to become more mindful and self-reflective.

As you consider how you want to add Ultra Violet into your home, try adding some of it into your life, too. Embrace the curiosity and creativity this color inspires. Allow it to push your boundaries and open the door to the endless possibilities that only a new year can bring.
