Three Ways to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions in Greer, SC

New Years in Greer SCEven in Greer, do you ever find that all of your good intentions at maintaining your New Year’s resolutions go out the window by the time February rolls around? You’re not the only one. In fact, almost 80 percent of resolutions fail by the second week of February.

If you’re ready to turn over a completely new leaf in 2019, here are some simple, easy ways to ramp up your resolution resolve and stay motivated:

Set specific goals

Normally when we set goals for the new year we tend to think in terms of the big picture. For example, we focus on ideas such as, “I want to lose weight,” or “I want to eat healthier.” And while these are noble goals, they are too broad. How are you able to determine if you successfully completed your goal if you have no benchmark on which to measure your progress?

The best thing to do when setting your goals is the make sure they are specific and measurable. By setting a goal like “I want to lose 10 pounds in 10 months,” you can actually look at the numbers throughout the year and see how well you are doing and how close you are to achieving your goal in your designated timeframe.  

Celebrate small wins

Whatever change you are hoping to make or goal you are trying to achieve isn’t going to happen overnight. Change, especially big change, takes time. If you are trying to completely overhaul your diet and eat only fruits and vegetables in the new year, that’s great! But cut yourself some slack, too. If you are used to eating chocolate every night before you go to bed, that’s a hard habit to break and there are chances you are going to slip back into old habits every now and then.

The key to staying course and not giving up on your goals at the first misstep is to celebrate small wins. If you go a full week without eating any sweets, give yourself a pat on the back with a mani-pedi day. Did you go three full months without eating sweets? Celebrate with a night out with friends. A lot of small wins will add up over time and lead to the development of new, healthy habits. Just make sure you don’t celebrate your small wins with the habit you’re trying to break (i.e. don’t celebrate not eating chocolate for a week by eating chocolate).

Remember that it’s the journey, not the destination

While it is important to keep your resolutions in mind throughout the year, it is even more important to enjoy the process. You will probably never lose weight by running every day if you absolutely hate running. Don’t force yourself into activities that you know you won’t enjoy. Talk about a miserable year!

Instead, look for activities that you are interested in trying out in order to reach your goals. For example, if you are looking to lose weight or get in shape, try taking a few classes at your local gym until you find one you like. Or, do an activity outdoors like hiking or mountain biking. Once you find an activity you actually enjoy doing, stick to it. You will have a lot more fun reaching your goals when you reach them by doing something you love.
